// PRESS RELEASE //
Stella Magazine announces its sponsorship for Papua New Guinea's leading female amateur golfer, Kristine Seko, in this year’s 2013 PNG Golf Open being played at the Royal Port Moresby Golf Club from Thursday 2 May to Sunday 5 May.
After coming from a hot win in Lae, where she took out the 2013 PNG Amateur Championship in a field of 16 women from Madang, Rabaul, Hagen, Pom and Lae, Kristine feels her current form is ready to tackle the upcoming PNG Open.
The 28 year old says it was an awesome feeling to win in Lae and that she looks forward to playing in Port Moresby, where she knows the course. “An important part of my game is getting the ball off the tee well for the approach into the green. Touch around greens has always helped with scoring well. Ball striking has been more consistent - just hoping to maintain that. My game has improved since the beginning of the year. I’ve been playing regularly every weekend, which has dropped my handicap from 11 to 8 in the last three months.”
The challenging course will be made even more demanding in Port Moresby’s current wet conditions, something that Kristine is not a fan of, “It makes the greens difficult to pitch around, and the course longer than normal with no run,” she says.
But there are plenty of positives for this course, “I like Hole 5 as it’s a challenging little par 3 and also Hole 17 which I’ve been scoring well on over the past few weeks. I am also grateful for the sponsorship from Stella magazine, and for my employer SPSN for giving me the time off to play in the Open.”
Female golfer numbers are low, with a total of 16 women participating compared to 66 men. But, it will be a fierce competition, says Kristine, “There’s a strong field with last year’s winners looking to defend their places. The ones to watch will be the ladies from Lae, Madang and those that have travelled from overseas.”
More development and training in ladies golf is planned to begin through PNG Golf Association under professional Graeme Bolton over the coming months – Graeme is a Cairns based professional, engaged to train the national development squad for the 2015 games.
Publisher of Stella magazine, Amanda Donigi, is pleased to be supporting Kristine Seko in this year’s PNG Open. “The PNG Open is a highly-anticipated, well-attended event each year in Port Moresby – one that welcomes a great number of international professional golfers to the city. I look forward to the day when our female golfers are earning equal recognition for their skill and success in this challenging tournament.”
Stella magazine is sponsoring Ms Seko’s apparel, golf equipment and entry fee as well as the 2013 PNG Golf Open real time online leader board.
